When it comes to being consistent with your yoga and qigong practice I find this familiar statement encouraging. It is very easy to become overwhelmed and the simplest of changes seem daunting. There may be the times in our lives where a single moment completely changes everything. More common however, is that change comes in small increments. One step at a time. I believe when we can remember this it becomes easier to create change in our lives. We don’t have to do it all at once. We can take a first step now.
Has this ever happened to you?
Attending a class or workshop you feel fabulous and vow to begin a consistent yoga and qigong home practice. Then a few things can happen. You begin and feel great and then something happens to disrupt your new routine. As time goes by it becomes more difficult to return to the regular practice routine. You berate yourself. You feel guilty. You attend your next class or workshop and feel fabulous again. Thus, the cycle continues.
Is it possible to have another outcome?
Do you remember one thing that you did during a class or workshop? Is there one particular yoga posture or qigong movement that really stuck with you? Or was it a reminder to breathe, a moment of relaxation? If you remember, it most likely felt good. Begin with bringing just this piece into your day.
Once we begin with that single step another can easily follow. It is not necessary to be overwhelmed by thinking that in order to bring more joy, peace of mind, and positive energy into your daily life you need to be an expert. Just begin, take your first step on todays’ journey.
Praise yourself. Listen to the negative self-talk and stop. Turn it around. If you are able to practice your yoga and qigong for just a few moments a day. Wow! That is fantastic. Well done.
